Apparently next week is Craft Beer Week, a week long celebration of home and craft beers taking place around the country. This morning's Post-Gazette features a story of local events marking the occasion. Some of the highlights include:
- On Wednesday, Church Brew Works is hosting a ladies only beer tasting and tour.
- On Thursday, Penn Brewery is hosting a "Night with the Brewers." $45 gets you three pints of beer, a buffet dinner, tour of the brewery and face to face time with the brewers.
- Also on Thursday, Rock Bottom at the Waterfront is showcasing two winners of a local homebrewers contest. Anyone at the bar before 7 gets a free round of each, including a Scottish Ale, which is my favorite flavor.
- On Friday, the Market District in Robinson is hosting a beer tasting.
- Perhaps the coup de grace, at least in terms of naming, is the Pittsburgh Brewniversity event at Double Wide Grill in South Side to provide a higher education in craft brews.
I've mentioned before in this space that I'm a big proponent of craft brews, so I think this is a really cool thing. Anything that exposes the wider world of beer that exists beyond the big three to the masses is worthwhile.

Anyone interested in trying out the Rock Bottom event on Thursday? Good Gibbons has a well-timed week off that night and I'd be interested in trying out those home brews. If I can get permission from the missus, I'd be up for going.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I think I'm going to start doing beer reviews on here. I buy a case of craft brew once a month and think I can do a pretty good job reviewing some of those. I'm also seriously considering getting into home brewing. First step I think is to buy a book.
I'm also a huge fan of craft brews and microbrews - they are so much better than the bud and miller light's that it's not even close. It's sad to see some independents get bought up by the big guys (ex: Redhook), but if it forces the inbevs and miller-coors to release more flavorable and time dependent beers, it can't be all bad (hopefully).
ReplyDeleteThey said they are only having 4 different kinds of Southern Tier, I wonder which ones? I'm a big IPA guy, so if you havent tried Southern Tier's 2XIPA you should make it a mandate to get out to Robinson on Fri and try it, it's definitely one of the best IPA's I have tried. I would say top three.
Darker beer guys will probably like their porter, as it is very deep and rich. Phin & Matt's was also pretty good. I'm pretty sure they will also have their raspberry wheat. It's good, and I like wheat beers somewhat, but its not my favorite. However, it is much better than a lot of other wheat beers I have tried.
Other great IPAs you should try: Dog Fish Head 60 min or 90 min IPA, Harpoon IPA, Big Hop, Bear's Republic Racer #5, Lagunitas, Rogue, Brooklyn East India Ale, and Victory... to name a few.
I'm always looking for new beers to try, so reviews on new one's would be great and encouraged. Let me know if you need help with 'research.'
